In 1943 the 15-years-old Herbert began an apprenticeship at Ferdinand Porsche’s construction bureau. He was on bord when Porsche re-open- ed after the war and later on became Porsche’s racing engineer. First racing entry was the 1952 Carrera Panamericana. He won the 1954 Liège-Rome-Liège Rally and had numerous class wins between 1955 and 1959. In 1960 he won the Corsica Rally together with Strähle. In 1962 victory in the Targa Florio on a Porsche flat-eight together with Herrmann. Linge entered three times for Solitude and won in 1963 on a Porsche Carrera Abarth.
