A Ford Motor Company employee for 25 years, Bruynseraede worked in motor racing in his spare time, becoming race director at the Zolder circuit in Belgium in the 1970s. He began to be involved in the organization of international events in 1982 and at the end of 1986 was named Formula 1 starter and circuit safety inspector when Derek Ongaro retired. He remained employed by the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium as the head of the club's public relations department.
A reorganization of the Formula 1 roles in 1988 resulted in Bruynseraede being named Race Director and FIA Safety Delegate and he remained in that post until December 1995 when he was appointed Race Director and Safety Delegate of the International Touring Car Championship.
