The youngest son of Sir Jack, David Brabham began racing karts in Australia in 1983 and then moved into touring car racing in 1985. He switched to Formula Ford 1600 in 1986 and then moved on to Formula Atlantic in 1987. Support from Camel enabled him to move to Europe and in 1989 he joined the Bowman team and won the British Formula 3 Championship before trying to break into Formula 1 with the Brabham team, replacing Gregor Foitek. He only qualified the uncompetitive Judd-engined car six times out of 14 races and was replaced at the end of the season. In 1991 he drove for the TWR Jaguar team while joining Nissan to win the Spa 24 Hours that summer. In 1992 he won the Daytona 24 Hours for Jaguar.
In 1994 he returned to F1 with the ill-starred Simtek team whose morale he did well to sustain after the death of his teammate Roland Ratzenberger in qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix. At the end of the year he decided not to continue in F1 and took a paying drive in touring car racing. he has since enjoyed a successful career in sportscar racing.
